Three celebrity weeklies OK!, People and Us Weekly featured Sarah Palin on their cover, but one of those magazines is reportedly losing subscribers because of it.

Us Weekly, which unlike People and OK!, chose a rather caustic cover line (Babies, Lies and Scandal) is said to have lost thousands of subscribers in just the first 24 hours following the printing of the issue.

Im hearing its 5,000, maybe more, says one well-placed source in the industry. Another source claimed that as many as 10,000 readers have already cancelled their subscriptions. A spokesperson for Wenner Media, which publishes Us, says it is completely false that we are losing 10,000 subscribers. As for the 5,000 estimate, the spokesperson only said that is false, too, but wouldnt comment further.

Five thousand might not seem like a large number at first glance, but its significant in the context of Us printing schedule. The magazine goes to press Monday night, which means subscribers dont receive their issues until Friday or Saturday. In other words, the cancellations are coming from subscribers who, in many cases, havent even gotten their hands on the actual issue.

When Us went to print Monday night, it looked like the ticket was falling apart,” says one magazine editor. They went to print thinking Palin was dead in the water, and their mistake was thinking everyone who reads Us is a Democrat, when theyre not. Readers are loyal, but the base of a political party is more loyal. They dont need to read the magazine when theres so much press around it to know to be upset.

Upset might be an understatement: One Us advertiser has admitted that theyve received calls from angry former subscribers threatening to boycott their products. (Us publisher) Jann Wenner supports Obama, Wenner media decided to follow the buzz around Palin before her speech, and now subscribers feel like a vote has been cast on their behalf,” says another magazine editor. Its going to be tough to bounce back from this one. Especially if the advertisers get involved. If they get nervous, that can hurt all of us.

IT’S once nude, twice shy for Lindsay Lohan. The Sapphic-leaning star has turned down a $700,000 offer to do an eight-page topless spread in Playboy’s 55th-anniversary issue this January. “If there’s nudity, then the answer’s no . . . She’s not going down the [New York] magazine road again,” Lohan’s rep told Playboy’s creative consultant, Hal Lifson, referring to Lindsay’s naked Marilyn Monroe tribute last winter. Lifson said he hoped to have Lohan do a tribute to ’60s sex kitten Ann-Margret and her film “Kitten With a Whip,” which is one of Lohan’s faves.

The baritone-voiced minkmeister is singing the blues now that the feds have imposed a $200,000 lien on his swanky Central Park West apartment, according to public records. Basso - who dressed Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada” and who shows his new fashion line on Tuesday in Bryant Park - told Page Six, “It’s nothing. I was away. My accountant’s mother had a heart attack. It’s all taken care of.” It shouldn’t be too hard for the dapper Basso to come up with the scratch - just one of his sable coats retails for what he owes the government.

KIM Kardashian is secretly working behind the scenes to make sure her kid sister Khloe scores big in the next installment of NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” Kim was seen at the EA Sports FaceBreaker Video Game party in Hollywood texting her sister to set up a power lunch with ex-”Apprentice” villain Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth. “She wants to work out a game plan for Khloe to win,” a source told us. “Omarosa has told Kim she has many ideas for Khloe.”

As her mother, Sarah Palin, addressed her constituents at the Republican National Convention, 17-year-old Bristol Palin held hands in the family VIP box with her fianc, Levi Johnston.

But Bristol’s hand wasn’t the only thing Johnson was displaying on his fingers. As TV cameras were able to reveal, the 18-year-old hockey player is also sporting a tattoo that reads “Bristol” located exactly where a wedding ring would go.

The young couple’s relationship has been embraced by their families, and Johnston joined the entire family onstage after Palin’s primetime speech Wednesday.

But one person, who knows what it’s like to be in the spotlight, has sympathy for all the attention on Bristol, who is five-months pregnant. “I just feel for her because even just two weeks ago, she was completely anonymous,” John McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain, 23, told PEOPLE Wednesday. “She’s a very sweet girl and [Johnston] is very nice. My heart goes out to them.”
