World Breastfeeding Week 2008
By: Mom\'s Buzz    0 days 11 hours 34 minutes ago
Channel: Lifestyle Baby Pregnancy & Baby Family

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2008 (August 1-7), national and international health experts emphasize that no gift is more precious than breastfeeding, yet barely one in three infants is exclusively breastfeed during the first six months of life.

Because of it's proximity with the Olympic Games in China, this year's World Breastfeeding Week theme is "going for the gold by supporting mothers to breastfeed"

World Breastfeeding Week 2008

This World Breastfeeding Week site explains the theme for this year's WBW:

"Breastfeeding results from a reproductive health continuum for the mother to the child with no beginning or end, from generation to generation. When a practice is disrupted, it must be restored. However, restoration of the breastfeeding culture demands more resources and mobilization.

In conjunction with the Olympics next August, WBW 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond.

As every country sends its best athletes to compete at these global games, it is important to remind ourselves that, in a similar fashion, a healthy young athlete can only emerge from a healthy start on life. There is no question that optimal infant and young child feeding is essential for optimal growth and development."

According to the Panamerican Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), every year, as much as 55% of infant deaths from diarrheal disease and acute respiratory infections may be the result of inappropriate feeding practices. PAHO's Director, Mirta Roses, reiterated that adequate nutrition, particularly during the first year of life, is a key contributing factor for infants to better develop all their human potential. That is why, Dr. Mirta Roses said, it is imperative to keep working in doing all we can to stimulate optimal support conditions for all mothers while highlighting the fundamental benefits of breastfeeding for the health of both mothers and the newborn.

Got Milk? Your Family That Is!
By: Mom\'s Buzz    3 days 10 hours 49 minutes ago
Channel: Lifestyle Baby Pregnancy & Baby Family

Your family got milk?  As children we all grew up drinking lots of milk and our parents would always tells us that to have strong bones, we needed to drink milk. Is this what you also tell your kid?  Yes, of course, because it is a fact. Milk significantly reduces the risk of bone diseases and fractures!

Got_milk Today, with some many options of drinks, we forget about milk as one. Why is that? Is it the taste? Children, who are at a critical time for bone growth are not drinkning enough milk.  Many medical experts are saying that "...one of the main reasons sports-related injuries have increased over the years is because children are not getting enough calcium. The problem is exacerbated by poor nutrition due to the popularity of sodas and caffeinated drinks that could deplete calcium in the body."  So, your family got milk? Enough that is!

There are easy ways to keep the milk flow going at home in enough quantities.  Here's 2 personal tips and the third I think we all grew up with:

  1. Whenever hunger strikes, give your child a glass of milk to tie her over until the next meal comes up.  Moms Buzz does it for herself too. You can complement your milk snack with, say, some healthy popular GoldFish to keep everyone happy.
  2. In their lunch boxes, instead of juice or plain water, put a little box of milk.
  3. Before going to bed, a perfect time to have some more milk. Milk does promote better sleep - it is not an old wives' tale! Moms Buzz loves a cup of milk in the middle of the night whenever she/one of her children can't go back to sleep.

It is important to drink enough milk at any age.  The benefits of milk are numerous, especially for your growing children, and for us, women, to fight osteoporosis in our bones.  Here are the most important benefits of milk as featured by Got Milk?:

  1. BONES: Milk can significantly reduce the risk of bone disease and fractures.
  2. PMS: Calcium may reduce the symptoms of PMS. (PMS symptoms reduced after three months, for a majority of women taking 1,200 mg of calcium per day)
  3. SLEEP: Milk helps promote better sleep.
  4. TEETH: Milk helps reduce the risk of cavities. (with normal brushing, flossing, check ups and cleanings)
  5. HAIR: Milk helps promote healthy hair.
  6. MUSCLES: Milk helps rebuild muscles.
  7. NAILS: Milk helps with stronger nail

Don't you think that milk is a super drink?

The newly revamped website of Got Milk? is interactive, visually appealing and a wonderful source of information about the benefits and fun facts of milk.  Kids can also entertain themselves with cool games.  Visit www.gotmilk.com and get some milk!

Keep that milk flowing and have a healthy milky toast at home!

Proper Use and Selection of Your Child's Bookpack

M47984_butterfly_3 One of the school accessories that get beat up the most during school season is our kid's backpack! So, if your child's backpack seems like it was used to sweep the school floors, it may be time to get a new one!

Before you get a new one though, read the following tips on how to proper use and select your kid's next backpack.  LL Bean and the American Occupational Therapy Association have put together answers to some frequently asked questions and at the same time, providing tips on proper use of book packs

Which Pack Is Right for My Child?

  • Select a pack that is appropriate to your child's age and size.
  • Select a pack with well padded shoulder straps.
  • Consider a pack with waist belt and padded back panels for extra comfort and stability.
  • Consider a pack with reflective trim for increased visibility.
  • Consider a pack with wheels for heavy loads or special needs.

CDs, gadgets, in-line skates, snacks, video games, laptops, and of course, books make up the daily load that children these days pack into their backpacks.  Are you surprised? Nope...it's a fact! Loading too much into a book pack or not wearing correctly can hurt your child's back, lead to other injuries , or just be uncomfortable.

How Should My Child Load Her Pack?

  • Tell her to load heavy items close to her back.
  • Tell her to be careful to overload the pack and eliminate unnecessary items.
  • Tell her to distribute content of pack evenly.

How Should My Child Wear Her Pack?

  • Your child should always wear both straps.
  • Adjust her should straps so that the pack fits snug against the back and close to her body.
  • Fasten the waist belt and adjust strap length to secure and center the load of her pack. This will ensure a good back health.
  • Ensure that there is no dangling or loose straps that might become entangled in vehicle, bus doors, or in bicycle wheels.

Proper use of a backpack promotes a healthy back and avoids injuries at a young age!
