The Hottest Gift of 2008

Alas, that holiday giving has become cynical and competitive, unlike the more generous days of old, where, say, one giver would present his beautifully wrapped, carefully chosen frankincense, safe in the knowledge that Mister Giving Bars of Gold For God’s Sake Over There wasn’t going to snark about it later at the club. Because that so didn’t happen, you know it.

Still, it’s not that way any more and if you doubt it, just see how far an 8-track tape of Kenny Loggins gets you with your loved ones this season. It’s all about The Cabbage Patch Doll, The Tickle Me Elmo, The Wii, The Next Big Thing…and now, we present, The! Next! Big! Thing!

The CheetoPet!

Come on! You think Britney’s having a comeback by coincidence? It’s the Year of the Cheeto!

Longtime reader, longtime commenter La Petite Acadienne just got her positive pregnancy test for Christmas! See, just read this blog enough and you will be sure to get pregnant!

I saw these on Etsy, and I think they would look great on many a mom-to-be. The first one is customizable for the month, and I think the second one would have been perfect for when I was pregnant.

A sporty little number!

If Only I Could Be Like Gwyneth

Did you know that Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to make the jump into blogging? She has a new website called, er, GOOP. I think I read somewhere that it was a riff on her childhood nickname, or something similar. It struck me as an odd thing to call a blog. All I know is that on the Google results page, her only competition is something called “Amazing Goop” that glues and bonds things. Maybe she is smarter than me after all. Anyhoo, mission of her blog is to “nourish the inner aspect.”

So far, the pickings on the site are quite lean, although she states that she has been developing the concept of the blog for years and taking copious notes. Which alarms me, because I don’t take copious notes of anything. The entries are in newsletter format, which you can also have emailed to you. She has only a few categories, one of which is called “Get.” Here is an excerpt from one of the newsletters.

I used to spend a lot of time looking at fashion, reading about fashion, generally being bemused by fashion. Then one day I had children and it all kind of went out the window. For a few years I was basically in sweat pants and I didnt mind it. Its a fine line, however, between being comfortable and being demoralized by being frumpy all the time. Just because I no longer had an hour to stand in front of my closet and try to figure out what to wear, did not mean I had to don the same high school t-shirt from the day before.

I was heartened. It is good to know that even very rich mega-star Oscar winners have to sort of drop the fashion thing for a bit when they have young kids. But then she goes on to say that she developed a plan for dressing, which includes things like, oh, Roger Vivier bangles and boots from Tod’s.

Yessiree, it really nourishes my inner aspect to see that there is no way in hell I can ever afford to dress like Gwyneth Paltrow.

Alec Greven in: They Grow Up So Fast, Part the Whateverth

Alec Greven

They really DO grow up fast, and it looks like little Alec Greven, 9, is growing up not only fast but quickly as well.

Oh, snap!

Alec, you see, has written a book soon to be available in stores everywhere: How to Talk to Girls. What started as a project for his school bookfair turned into an appearance on Ellen and a three book deal with HarperCollins (coming soon: How to Talk to Moms and How to Talk to Dads).

The fourth-grader from Castle Rock, Colo., advises Lothario wannabes to stop showing off, go easy on the compliments to avoid looking desperate - and be wary of “pretty girls.”

“It is easy to spot pretty girls because they have big earrings, fancy dresses and all the jewelry,” he writes in Chapter Three.

“Pretty girls are like cars that need a lot of oil.”

He advises, “The best choice for most boys is a regular girl.

Well, good luck finding one of those with your new life, Alec. You see, the poor lad’s currently in New York on a book tour and anyone who knows what happened to that sweet little Truman Capote knows no good can come of this.
