Anemia

Anemia, one of the more common blood disorders, occurs when the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells. This can lead to health problems because the red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues and organs. Anemia can create a variety of complications, such as fatigue and stress on bodily organs. There are many causes of anemia, including inherited disorders, nutritional problems (such as an iron or vitamin deficiency), infections, some kinds of cancer, or exposure to a drug or toxin. More than three million people in the U.S. have anemia. It’s treated by adding iron to one’s diet or, in extreme cases, blood transfusions or surgery.
