A colonic is the infusion of water into the rectum to cleanse and flush out the colon. People get colonics to remove accumulated waste from the colon, to help prevent constipation, and to improve overall health. Proponents believe that fecal matter can accumulate and harden in the colon and may lead to harmful bacteria and toxins entering the bloodstream through the colon wall. Lack of fiber, excess sugar, and a diet high in red meat are believed to contribute to the problem. Some people believe colonics help with weight loss. In 2007, Courtney Love said colonics helped her lose more than 40 pounds. Most health professionals are skeptical that colonics can improve health and believe they should only be used before certain medical procedures, such as a colonoscopy.
