Short for detoxification, detox is the removal of toxic substances from the body. It’s usually considered a treatment for drug or alcohol dependence, but it also refers to diets. A detox diet stresses organic foods, foods that provide vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants, and foods that are high in fiber. The idea is that these foods, in conjunction with lots of water, flush the body of toxins that have entered our body through ingesting or inhaling chemicals such as pesticides, household cleaners, food additives, drugs, pollution, and cigarette smoke. Along with weight loss, a detox diet is supposed to improve energy, digestion, and concentration.
