Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are essential to human health but aren’t manufactured by the body, so omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from food. Clinical studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in treating many health conditions, most notably heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least twice a week. Aside from fish, omega-3 fatty acids can be found in other marine life such as algae and krill, certain plants, and nut oils.
